One of the most iconic cars will be celebrating its 50th birthday in August 2009 - a British classic that turned into a cult classic - the Mini.

Since the Mini was conceived in 1959 it has become a phenomenon. The Mini was to be no more, at least not as we knew it. BMW dragged the Mini into the 21st century, completely redesigning the car, yet keeping its redeeming features. The MINI (all in caps to distinguish it from the original Mini) divided opinion between fans of the original, yet gained rave reviews from those in the know.

Many Mini enthusiasts felt bitter towards BMW for not continuing production of the Mini in favour of the more expensive MINI, whereas others were among the first to buy the new MINI. The much larger MINI was criticised by purists for literally not being mini anymore also, yet none of the negative criticisms have affected sales.

The MINI has sold more than one million units since 2000 and remains one of the few cars that actually retain its value in the ever depreciating world of car sales. Used Mini dealerships are one of the few who have not been badly affected by the credit crunch and have not had to slash prices to keep afloat - a fine example of just how popular the Mini has remained.

Original Minis remain sought after and some of the rarer models are valuable collectors' items. I for one can't imagine entering into my daily commute without the sound assistance of a good auto sound system. Music in the morning is as necessary for me as oxygen and caffeine. If I live without any of those above my day is already up and running with wrong foot first. Music is a very important part of any given day for someone like me. My wake up call in the morning comes in the form of my favorite radio station and from that point on I have music as my companion for the vast majority of my morning routine. That is of course with the exception of children and husband and some of their more insistent demands for food, money, and last minute homework crisis. I will gladly take my music and tea most mornings and skip the drama.

The point of all this is that I am not alone in my morning preference. If I were there wouldn't be so many variations of the music driven alarm clock. Today you can even have CD player alarm clocks in order to get you up and running to your favorite tunes. Of course this brings me to an important point. A good auto sound system will sound much better than your morning music wake up call. Most alarm clocks will not have the best quality of sound. They are designed for minimal space, minimal intrusion, and to be annoying enough that you will get up (eventually) and turn them off. If the music is good and the quality even better, most of us, can manage to incorporate the music into our dreams and go right back to sleep.

While you do not want your auto sound system to necessarily put you to sleep you do want it to be enjoyable to listen to. You are after all most likely shelling out a good portion of a month's salary in order to pay for it. Honda automobiles have long been a popular part of America's love affair with driving cars.

The Honda Motor Company was founded in 1948 Japan by an enterprising man named Soichiro Honda who sought to fill a community need in his post-war society. The Japanese people were economically decimated by the ravages of their World War II loss, and there was little cash available to purchase hyper-inflated gasoline prices. The decade of the 1950's saw further advances in Honda's designs and an increase in overall performance and comfort. The C100 Super Cub became the most popular model of all, even with women, and it was introduced to the American market in 1959.

Thanks to the remarkable financial success his company enjoyed, Honda chose to branch out into automobile production during the 1960's. Now you have to think about brakes as these are vital for is you want to stop now there are two different types of brakes there are drum brakes and disk brakes disk brakes usually work better but they can both work great. The bigger the brakes the better it should work. Some good places to get brakes are from motorcycle wreckers but look around as you don't want to spend a lot but that being said don't skimp on safety. You will now need to make the frame now you want this to be very sturdy and should contain a roll bar this is important because if you flip your go kart it will stop you from hitting your head on the ground and having all the weight of the go kart.

Steal is very expensive now days you will probably be looking at a few hundred dollars depending on the size of the go kart but I read some where that a guy used those steel pellet trolley things that people use to move boxes around on and he just chopped them up and sanded of the paint and used that metal. The other good thing about those trolleys is they are cheap and come with 2 good wheels now you will need to make your frame following your plan and start thinking about what you are going to use for steering I would go and buy a cheap steering wheel from a wrecker and mount it to your go kart you will also have to install a good seat and seat belt this is a must because you can reach some very dangerous speeds on a go kart. You will now have to mount the engine and attach the back sprocket to the axel and connect up what you are using for pedals. Your go kart should now be ready for its maiden drive so load it up on your trailer and take it down to the beach or a friends farm and drive it around.

Basically, bigger RV's burn more gas. The smaller model you get, the less you can expect to pay. I know this tip doesn't help much if you already own your motor home, but if you haven't bought yet, or are thinking of upgrading, it's something to keep in mind. Another thing to remember is that the lighter you travel the less fuel you will use. Pack light and you'll save a little at the pump.

Slow Down, Pardner
I hate to ruin your fun, but driving slow helps a lot to save you money. Just 5 miles per hour can make a huge difference in your RV living budget. Go a little slow and take in the sights. Heck, that's why we're on the road anyway, to see all there is between Point A and Point B. (By the way, it will also save a little on your motor home's wear and tear, and that's always a good thing, too)

Where You Buy Matters
Here's one way to spot quality petrol: Look for a station that is busy. This is because fresh gas is better for your engine. A station where there are tumbleweeds blowing across the lot and a car hasn't parked there for a year is going to have old fuel that might be contaminated.

When You Buy Matters
Buy on the weekday, not the weekend. Most stations raise their prices just a little bit on the weekends, so fill up on Thursday or wait until Monday.

Look For Gas Online
Internet access on the road can go a long way to saving you gas money. There are sights for RV drivers and ordinary motorists alike that show you the cheapest rates around. You can check by state, and it will tell you what stations are offering what price per gallon.

Don't Drive So Much!
The easiest way to save is to stay close to home, or to plan your trip well so that you don't have so many long drives. Stop at every little point along the way and enjoy the scenery. Break up the long drives into little jaunts.

Don't let high fuel prices keep your motor home in the garage. Get it out on the road where it's supposed to be. Use your head and research a little and you won't have to use so much money on fuel.

If there's one thing all these electric powered cars have in common, it's that they're too expensive for the average person. Which is a shame, because there's a tremendous demand for affordable electric vehicles.

More and more people are refusing to wait for big-car companies to deliver mainstream electric vehicles. They've rebelled by ripping out their gas-guzzling engines and replacing them with electric ones. What's more, they say just about anyone can do it.

Most OEM units use map data from an optical disk, whereas portable systems use solid state memory, requiring update downloads to be made from one's PC. The biggest players in portable GPS are Garmin, Magellan, and Tom Tom. All operate based on communication with Global Position System satellites circling the planet, hence the term GPS. They can purchased online from a variety of different sources using credit card or PayPal from your favorite electronics vendor. 'Googling' 'portable GPS' will provide numerous options. Prices have dropped remarkably in the last few months and GPS without the 'talk to' option is becoming ubiquitous on cell phones. The modern techie will have a portable system like a Tom Tom, GPS built into the call phone in case of the portable GPS not having a particular update of a new area, AND a NAV system in the personal vehicle. Let's be very frank and honest about this; Vauxhall is hardly a 'glamour' brand. For as long as I can remember they have been churning out cars that have been...well...a bit underwhelming. The engineers at Vauxhall may be adept at producing comfortable, well performing and reasonably priced vehicles, but they're hardly setting anyone's world on fire are they? Until now that is...Enter the new Vauxhall Corsa.

Ok, you can stop cringing and come from behind the sofa; I'm not going to build the Corsa up to be a Zonda F or Lamborghini Gallardo, as it is clearly not. What Vauxhall have done though, is inject some much needed 'ZING' into their entry level product. The old Corsa resembled a shoebox on wheels and had all the cool points and street credit of a purple satin turtleneck. A few carefully designed changes to the bodywork and all of a sudden Vauxhall have created one of the most stylish looking superminis available.

The Corsa comes with a large choice of engine options ranging from the meek and rather forgettable 1.0 3 cylinder to the growling 1.6 Turbo VXR, the latter being something of a boy racer's fantasy. The popularity of the Corsa has some minor drawbacks however. Due to the size, responsive handling, stylish looks and cheap running costs, the Corsa has been adopted as the driving teacher's car of choice. With leading driving school BSM operating a fleet of thousands of Corsas, you'll be hard pushed to go for a drive in your Corsa without getting stuck behind another Corsa with a big trapezoid with a 'L' on top of it. Thus the illusion of cool is mortally ruptured and you end up feeling like a bit of a fool.

The snowball effect aside, you cannot deny that the Corsa probably deserves its popularity. It has taken on the Ford Fiesta, VW Polo and Fiat Panda as the new driver's first car and is putting up a very valiant fight. The current market for superminis has found itself in a state of saturation recently, with almost every car manufacturer vying for the precious profit to be made from entry-level vehicles. The Corsa was the 4th bestselling car in the United Kingdom in 2007 (shifting 94,120 units in the UK) and has consistently been in the top 10 selling cars list since its introduction in 1993; quite an achievement in anyone's book.

My own personal experience of the Corsa comes in the form of the 1.3 CDTi. Whilst driving I felt as though I was encapsulated within a metal bubble, enjoying the comfort of the seats and the relatively elevated driving position. The plastics all felt rigid and of good quality, the only drawback being the stubby indicators which are as responsive as a dead camel. The central console's screen was clear and concise, despite having a differing opinion to the speedometer regarding the car's velocity; only a minor irritation and nothing to detract from the driving experience too much.

The engine was punchy without being overly-erratic, though it has to be said that it did often make a lot of noise without actually achieving very much...but I guess that's smaller diesel engines for you. The engine was also ecologically sound, producing around 57 mpg, which is not only a relief to the consumer, but also the planet. The gearbox was relatively smooth, though often refused to go into third without me resorting to violently aggressive manoeuvres.

The Vauxhall Corsa is ideally suited to those amongst us who want to feel very much a part of the driving experience, rather than just another passenger in the car. The car seems to have been designed to be a relaxing drive, but jolts you every now and then to keep you alert. The race for the ultimate supermini hatch is still wide open, though it is refreshing that not everyone is automatically heading to their local Ford dealership. Now let's all rejoice in free market capitalism and the consumers right to choose.

BMW claim to make the ultimate driving machines, they almost always look sleek and expertly built, apart from the 1 series, which to me resembles a loaf of bread, albeit a loaf of stale, rock hard bread, and each series seems to be reinvented with minimum fuss yet maximum style. BMW build purposeful cars for many different purposes, and they remain best at making efficient speedsters too.

But over the years, in the UK especially, BMW has been tarnished by those that drive them. Almost every driver has been cut up by a tosser in a BMW, and if you haven't then I doubt very much that you drive that often.

BMW's became incredibly popular with the 1980s yuppies, with a ridiculously large disposable income. In October 2006, BMW drivers were voted the worst by a poll of more than 5000 drivers, and a larger poll, of 21,000 drivers, by Autotrader in 2008 also found BMW top of the pile.

It is ignorant to tarnish every BMW driver with the same brush but it is clear that BMW drivers are beginning to be stereotyped - either wrongly or rightly. And it really isn't the fault of BMW themselves - they do not choose who drives their cars. And there isn't a great deal that the company themselves can do.

After all it isn't as if BMW only manufacture sports coupes. They make vehicles across the board, apart from a hatchback, although the BMW 1 series was released in order to entice the top-end hatchback drivers. BMW are even contemplating the launch of an entire brand of green cars, to complement the three they already have - BMW, Mini and Rolls Royce.

And what more can you ask a car manufacturer to do? You cannot complain that BMW are not good at what they do - designing and building efficient, quality vehicles, some of which can drive very fast. BMW's always set quick times around the Top Gear track, and more often than not, get rave reviews from Jeremy Clarkson - a glowing reference indeed!

It's just unfortunate that the BMW brand name has been dragged through the mud because of idiots who believe that as soon as you get behind the wheel of a BMW you do not have to signal, can cut people up at roundabouts, drive up people's backsides and generally believe they own the road.

One thing the stereotype has not done though is to hinder sales. BMW dealerships continue to perform well, with BMW remaining one of the finest brands in the motor industry - more renowned for their quality and class than for this unwanted stigma that BMW drivers are inconsiderate, arrogant arseholes.

Obviously, sales of brand new BMW's are down, but sales of used BMW's at BMW dealerships are similar to last year's figures - of course profit margins are down due to BMW dealerships having to lower prices to entice buyers, but given the state of the economy, and with the UK in recession, BMW dealerships are performing strongly.

Given the fact that BMW recorded record new vehicle sales figures in 2007, the brand is still very strong, despite stiff competition from Audi and Mercedes.

It would appear that this negative stereotype that BMW drivers have does not affect company performance, despite many idiots doing their best to continue to win various 'worst driver' polls. Be it urban myth or a stereotype with solid substance the BMW group are probably not that bothered, as the positive factors behind the BMW brand easily outweigh the negatives.

A new vehicle will come with a manufacture's warranty. Usually this is for three years, but can vary between manufactures-so it is worth checking. It is also worth checking or asking at the showroom if there are any exclusions included in the warranty.

A great advantage when buying new is that you can choose the colour and extras such has having alloy wheels fitted if they do not come as standard. The sales person may also advise having special paint protection applied before you take receipt of the car. The protection is worth giving consideration to if the car is going to be driven predominately on motorways-as it will help reduce chips and marks.

Extra upholstery protection may also be offered. This is great if you intend to only keep the car for a relatively short time, as it will help prevent marking and stains. It can also help the car's interior to retain its new look and freshness for a much longer period.

These are just a few advantages of buying brand new cars rather than one that has been previously owned.

The phrase 'tune up' is actually a bit vague for many people who own vehicles. Some say that a tune up consists of changing your oil, air filter, spark plugs and may also include belt inspection. Others say that you should even change your transmission fluid� so who is right?

Here is a comprehensive list of steps you should consider doing every 30,000 to 40,000 miles (review your owner's manual for manufacturers recommendation) to keep your engine running smooth and to minimize the chances for engine problems.

Step One - Replace the fuel filter. The fuel filter is one of those basic engine components that may only cost $10 or $20, but can protect your engine from thousands of dollars in damage if you change it regularly. Carburetors and fuel injection systems can be clogged up by the tiniest of particles, so a properly functioning fuel filter is very important. Don't skip this step, no one wants their car to die in an intersection � and isn't that always where it happens?

Step Two - Change the spark plugs (unless they're pulse plugs, in which case you have 10,000 - 20,000 more miles to go). This is one part many people skimp on because they only look at price and do not factor in the importance of this component. I recommend the pulse plug by Enerpulse because of it helps to burn fuel more completely, making the combustion process more efficient. This leads to an increase in gas mileage (some times as much as 4 mpg) and increased power at acceleration. Also examine the spark plug wires and replace as needed. A new set of high-quality wires is worth the cost. They may be permanently attached to the distributor cap, so it will have to be changed as well.

Step Three - Replace the distributor cap and rotor if your car has them (some newer models with distributorless ignition do not). Cold morning starts can really wear on your ignition system, this step will help keep your engine starting smooth.

Step Four - (For cars older than 1978) Change the points and condenser for cars that do not have an electronic ignition. You'll actually want your points changed, or at least adjusted, every six months or so (if they're changed, check the ignition timing as well).

Step Five - (Also applies to cars older than 1980) Check the ignition timing, each car has a recommended timing and as the car ages, it will get out of kilter. Having it checked and adjusted will also help alleviate those embarrassing stalls at an intersection. Cars with an electronic ignition will most likely not need this step. Check your owner's guide.

Step Six - Adjust the valves, if your car has hydraulic valves then you can skip this step. Again check your owner's manual to verify what type of valves your car has. This is a good time to replace the valve cover gasket as well. If you see any oil then this is a good time to investigate the seepage before it turns in to a leak.

Step Seven - Visually check all your belts. You are looking for wear and to make sure they are tight. Turn the car on and listen for any squealing from a belt. Replace any belts that look suspicious.

Step Eight - Check and top off any engine fluids, this is also a good time to have the oil and oil filter changed.

Step Nine - Check the condition of your air filter, if the filter looks dirty replace it.

Step Ten - If you have a manual transmission vehicle, you want to have the clutch examined and adjusted if necessary. This step allows you to stay on top of the amount of wear on your clutch and forecast when it will need replacing.

Step Eleven - Check the fluid level in your battery, if it is low add distilled water. This is also a good time to clean the contact terminals.

Step Twelve - Have the PCV valve replaced, this is an inexpensive part and goes a long way in keeping your car running smooth. A plugged PCV valve causes the car to stall or run very rough.

That's it! As you can see, some steps do not apply to every car depending on age, engine technology and transmission type. This is the most comprehensive list I could find and put in to one article to help the less mechanical souls to keep their engines in tip top shape. Happy motoring -

The Honda F1 team are desperately seeking a buyer after their Japanese parent company withdrew funding. This has been the case for a while now, yet prospective buyers have not materialised, possibly due to the hefty overheads that the Honda Team incur during the course of a season - 700 employees with an annual budget of 200 million pounds.

Honda remains optimistic that they will find a buyer in time for the first Grand Prix of the season, in Melbourne on March 29th, but realistically they are struggling even though their number one driver, Britain's Jenson Button, has already put his faith in Honda finding a buyer.

So if Honda pulls out of Formula 1 how will that affect the bread and butter of Honda: selling cars? Well, as we all know, that has already been affected due to the state of the global economy. Honda dealers have been hit hard, especially in the US - its biggest market - where Honda dealers recorded a drop in sales of 35 per cent from November to December 2008.

Honda has cut its production in Japan by 163,000 units for the fiscal year ahead but a more alarming statistic is the 200,000 plus Honda vehicles that have been cut from their US output. Pictures released in the global Press recently of mass convoys of brand new, straight from the factory cars in the US mounting up, unwanted and unloved, were a sad image of the economic slowdown.

So Honda dealers have been hit hard already and stories in the Press of Honda pulling out of F1 is not likely to influence prospective buyers of Honda cars, either from Honda dealers or private sale. A negative stigma will be attached to Honda, but it is only inevitable that there are to be casualties from the wreckage that is the global economic crash.

And let us take a quick glance at the positive things linked to the brand name of Honda. Starting with their revolutionary eco friendly hybrid car designs. In September 2008, Honda unveiled their latest hybrid, the Insight, which will become the world's cheapest hybrid car.

At a time where global warming is as much of an issue - or if it isn't in some people's minds, it should be - as the global economic downturn, Honda deserve credit for investing in such innovation. Recent figures from the Society of Motoring Manufacturers and Traders made for interesting reading. In Britain sales of environmentally friendly cars were increasing rapidly while demand for luxury vehicles is on the wane.
With the UK government increasing road tax in order to hit drivers of vehicles with high CO2 emissions in the pocket, sales of hybrid cars are set to increase. The Honda insight will be at least 3,000 pounds cheaper than the benchmark for hybrid vehicles, the Toyota Prius and Honda are forecasting 200,00 sales in the first year of production even in the current poor economic climate.

This may be an optimistic estimate, given that Honda have sold 280,00 hybrid vehicles in the past decade, but as people become increasingly aware of more cost effective, not to mention more eco friendly modes of motoring, they will endeavour to sound out cars that offer affordability and lower their carbon footprint.

Despite negative Press and a decrease in sales figures, Honda continue to be innovative which is no bad thing, even given the financial difficulties that they are facing.

The rescue of America's Automakers has been a controversial issue with the American public, these bailouts have really put the American publics feet to the fire. The need to save American jobs and to keep families from being thrown into financial distress has been a main concern. While at the same time public money should not be used to support bad management decisions. The American public refuses to reward poor business practices on the part of American Automakers.

Looking at the list of bailouts for the year 2008 is scary. If the leaders of the financial world do not get a handle on this runaway train of financial gluttony we are going to be in big trouble. Admittedly it is difficult to go from steak to ramen noodles but there are days when this might be necessary, and if the rest of working America can sacrifice so can our financial elite. It is so much easier to work with a man when he doesn't mind getting in there and pushing too.

General Motors will receive $4.0 billion on December 29, 2008, and another $5.4 billion on January 16, 2009. An additional $4.0 billion is scheduled to be released on February 17, 2009 Congress will have the final say so. There are a number of terms that go along with getting this bailout money. One being the government debt takes top priority as much as the law allows, the perk of the corporate jet must go, not to mention a few other non-essentials. It was not required that management be changed, although the red light is flashing. Well, we will have to wait and see how that turns out.

The economy was obviously encouraged by the agreed bailout. The stock market took a positive Q from the Automakers Rescue at least for a moment and it is also clear that to leave the auto makers in a bad way would place more American families in jeopardy. It is certainly obvious that the economy is in tough shape and there will be some job loses and only time will tell if this bailout will work. The public must start to purchase these products; with the economy being in a down turn no one knows when this is likely to happen.

The desire for the unions to cut wages is going to be a touch and go situation. It is difficult to ask average working people to take pay cuts when the wealthier segments have made so much and government is bailing them out, and they still have their money and their jobs. Ford is the only automaker that is willing to swim for it, and will probably benefit from the bailout, but you don't mind helping a man who is willing to help himself.

Picture your child tearing up a toy and you just go right back and buy him another, at some point you must stop buying and let him go without. The Automakers must realize although jobs and livelihoods hinge upon what they produce they must do it responsibly or pay the consequences, as the old saying goes,' the good suffer with the bad.'

Parking lots are a driver's nightmare: from chaotic drivers and too-small stalls to unpredictable pedestrians, parking lots must be carefully negotiated to protect you and your vehicle from accidents. 2. Lock Your Doors, Set Your Alarm - If you don't, you may as well just give your items away. Car locks and alarms are your first line of defense: an open door provides the perfect opportunity for a thief to get in your car with little or no effort or detection.

3. Shop First, Buy Later - Consider finalizing purchases on your way out of the mall. Bring a notebook and jot down all the stores you'll want to revisit to pick up larger, hard to carry items. Otherwise your options are to take packages to the car (potentially in view of thieves staking out the lot), or carry around myriad parcels that can easily be set down and forgotten or dropped unnoticed.

4. Hide Valuables Left in Your Car - If you must store gifts in your vehicle, make sure the items are stowed in shopping bags or unmarked bags that camouflage the item's true value. Store as many purchases as possible in the trunk, covered under blankets.

Home-made, used in steam locomotive repair work to tighten/remove some very large, critical bolts. Date made of Home-made saddle-bolt spanner about ca. 1950s and date used at 1900-1960 in Vermonts. Wrench was doubtless used with a very long 'extender' on the handle to gain the necessary leverage. In removal, the areas around the bolts would have been heated by a torch to help in removal of the bolts. (The temperature differential of bolts and surrounding heated areas would have been small - the bolts themselves absorbing heat in the process - but the differential would have helped in loosening.)

Part of a small array of such tools were used in the inspection and repair of steam locomotives. Light repairs on steam locomotives were usually done in roundhouses at the many small locomotive terminals throughout a railroad's system; heavy repairs were done in a large, centralized repair shop serving the whole system (often referred to as the 'Back Shop'). Most of these tools date from the early- to the mid-20th century, roughly 1900-1955.

The term 'spanner' could apply to any size open-end wrench. In the US, the term often applied to open-end wrenches to fit very large nuts and bolts. This spanner - clearly 'home-made' in a steam locomotive shop by cutting it out with a torch from a flat sheet of thick steel - was meant to fit the extremely large bolt heads and nuts that hold the front-end (or the 'smokebox' portion) of a steam locomotive boiler onto the cast-steel 'saddle' that is the foundation of a steam locomotive's cylinder-and-mainframe assembly.

The strength and tightness of these 'saddle bolts' that join boiler and saddle are crucial to keeping the locomotive from literally shaking itself apart when underway down the track.
This crude spanner was likely home-made in a roundhouse far from a full repair shop; a well-equipped heavy-repair shop would have had spanners manufactured and well-made. One can speculate that an inspector in a roundhouse may have found a loose saddle bolt - probably more than one. If so, the home-made spanner would have allowed the roundhouse crew to tighten the loose saddle bolt, so that the locomotive could safely move under its own power.
